PART 2 - Cladding over brick with James Hardie HardiePlank Smooth Weatherboard - Cladding Installation

Materials:

  1. Cladding - James Hardie HardiePlank Smooth Weatherboard - 4200 x 230 x 7.5
  2. Cladding Nails/Clouts - Paslode 25 x 2.8mm 500g Galvanised Clouts - 310 Pack

Tools:

  1. Villaboard Knife Score and Snap
  2. 2000mm Trade Spirit Level (or a laser level)
  3. Hammer

How we did it:

  1. We measured out our project and purchased 13 cladding planks, though we only required 11.
  2. We used the James Hardie Billboard Knife Score and Snap to to cut each plank to size. Always wear a mask when cutting and ensure to clean up any dust to avoid children or pets being exposed.
  3. To install the planks, it is easier with two people (one to hold the plank level while the other nails it into the battens). However, after a few planks, Wade managed to install the rest on his own.
  4. When installing the planks, ensure the SMOOTH side is facing out, not the more textured side. Also ensure any cut edges (eg. our top plank was cut down to be thinner) should be installed to hide it (eg. underneath an overlap or butted up against the top edge so the trim goes over the top).
  5. Start from the bottom so you can overlap each plank. We did a 30mm overlap so each plank has 200mm visible.
  6. Use your level for every plank. If using a spirit level, use it before each nail goes in. It is time consuming but you do not want to get to the top of the wall and have a gap or crooked top plank - every single one must be perfectly level.
  7. Hammer your planks into the battens using the galvanised clouts (must have flat heads). They should be nailed towards the top of the plank (but not so close to the edge that you risk damaging the fibre cement) so the next plank overlaps over the nails to hide them.
  8. You could investigate using a nail gun but we do not own one so we did not look into it.
